Georgian Student Visa (D3) in 2026: A Step-by-Step Guide

Georgian Student Visa (D3) in 2026: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you have a place at a Georgian university, the next step is permission to stay in Georgia for your studies. For most international students that means a study visa (category D3) before travelling, followed by a temporary residence permit after you arrive. This guide explains each step and how to avoid the delays we see most often.

Do you need a visa at all?

Citizens of many countries can enter Georgia visa-free for short stays. Even then, if you are coming to study for a full degree you will need a residence permit for study once you arrive. Citizens of countries that are not on the visa-free list need a D3 visa before travelling. The list changes from time to time, so always check your nationality on the official Georgian e-Visa portal or with the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Step 1: University admission and enrollment

You can only apply for a study visa once the university has admitted you and your enrollment documents are ready. That includes the official recognition of your previous education in Georgia, which the university and our team arrange after you send your documents through the application form.

Step 2: Prepare your documents

  • A passport valid for your planned stay (ideally well beyond your first year)
  • University admission and enrollment confirmation
  • Proof of accommodation in Georgia (a rental agreement or a letter from the university or hostel)
  • Health insurance valid in Georgia
  • Proof of funds, usually a recent bank statement in your or your sponsor’s name
  • A recent passport-style photo

Documents not in English or Georgian usually need a certified translation. We prepare translations and notarised copies as part of our services.

Step 3: Apply online

Most applicants apply for the D3 visa online through the e-Visa portal or at a Georgian embassy or consulate. Fill in the form carefully, using the same spelling as your passport, and upload clear scans. Processing can take several weeks, so apply as soon as your enrollment documents are ready.

Step 4: Travel and residence permit

After you arrive and register at your university, you apply for a temporary residence permit for study. This lets you stay for the length of your studies (renewed as needed) and travel in and out of Georgia. Keep copies of every document you submitted for the visa; you will need most of them again.

Common mistakes that cause delays

  • Booking non-refundable flights before the visa is approved
  • Names spelled differently on the passport, school certificate and application
  • Bank statements that are too old or don’t show enough funds
  • Unclear scans or missing pages of the passport
