MBBS in Georgia 2026: Duration, Recognition and Choosing a University

Georgia has become one of the most popular destinations for international students who want to study MBBS. In Georgia the degree is awarded as a Doctor of Medicine (MD), the European equivalent of the MBBS. This guide covers what the program looks like, how to check recognition, and how to compare universities.

How long is MBBS in Georgia?

Medicine in Georgia is a one-cycle program of six years (360 ECTS credits), taught in English at many universities. The first years cover basic medical sciences; the later years focus on clinical training in partner hospitals. Georgia follows the European Bologna system, so credits use the ECTS scale.

Entry requirements

  • A completed 12th-grade certificate with biology and chemistry (universities often set minimum grades)
  • English at around B2 level, shown by a certificate or the university’s own test or interview
  • A valid passport
  • For Indian students planning to practise in India: the NEET result required by the National Medical Commission (NMC)

Recognition: check before you enrol

Recognition matters more than anything else in a medical degree. Check two things:

  1. In Georgia: the university and the specific medical program must be authorised by Georgia’s National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement (EQE).
  2. In your home country: each country’s medical regulator sets its own rules for foreign graduates, such as licensing exams, internship and minimum study duration. For example, Indian graduates must meet current NMC rules. Read the regulator’s latest guidance before you enrol.

A listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools is useful information, but it is not an accreditation by itself.

How much does it cost?

Tuition is set by each university and changes by intake. As an example, our Grigol Robakidze University page lists the current MD tuition. Living costs in Georgia are lower than in most of Europe; see our living expenses guide.

How to compare universities

  • Clinical training: which hospitals, and from which year
  • Class sizes and English-speaking teaching staff
  • Support for licensing exams in your home country
  • City and living costs (Tbilisi, Batumi or Kutaisi)
  • The total cost over six years, not just the first year
